189 Climate Change? 2010-02-10

more than expected snow to Nashville

"US opponents of climate change action are seizing on a record snowfall in Washington in hopes of killing legislation to curb carbon emissions, which already faced uncertain political prospects.

Environmentalists have launched a swift counter-attack, pointing out that Olympics host Vancouver is facing a dearth of snow and saying the extreme weather may in fact offer proof, not a rebuttal, of changing climate patterns."

by Shaun Tandon - AFP

Last summer (09) when we were climbing in Colorado, we posted a blog on why was it so cold there. We did not even begin to think the cold spell was evidence that the earth was cooling instead of warming. The mountains were just colder than we expected. We were hoping for warmer weather to make the climbing easier. It would have been pretty egocentric of us to think that our local weather (in Colorado at the time) was indicative of the world’s weather. In fact back home in Nashville, the city was recording sweltering temperatures, while we were donning our warmest down jackets.

So is the climate changing or not?

If the world is warming, then what should we do?

Lower our greenhouse gases by continuing to develop sustainable energy sources (and a smart grid to distribute the energy.)

Develop greener lifestyles for all humans in all facets of their (our) lives.

And ...

If the world is not warming, then what should we do?

Eliminate our dependency on foreign oil (for security reasons) and eliminate pollution (for health reasons) by continuing to develop sustainable energy sources (and a smart grid to distribute the energy.)

Develop greener lifestyles for all humans in all facets of their (our) lives.

Hmm, I think the goals sound pretty similar. Don’t believe in the politics, instead look for and support real answers to real problems.

Happy green trails.
